Nos.63, 65, and 66 give further information

on two points: -

(a) Hong Kong Police information.

It appears clear that this was communicated manfily Prely to the Naval authorities and that they

took all the action which was practicable in the

circumstances.

The information was very vague;

it may not have related to this particular piracy at all and it has been suggested (see enclosure to

59) that it was deliberately misleading. I cannot

trace whether it was ever communicated to the

Shanghai Police authorities but I do not think we

need enquire about that.

(b) Action taken by the Canton authorities.

Suggestions of British corporation

against the pirates have not lead to much practical

result. The Cantonese have, however, taken some

action themselves, sending military and naval

parties (independently of each other) which

recovered a small amount of loot, arrested a number

of apparently innocent villagers and burned some

houses, but failed to lay hands on any of the

pirates themselves.
